A prominent article in the Sunday Argus (4/11/07) declared: Religious Sect Brainwashing Maties – controversial Shofar Church slammed by university lecturers for fundamentalist teachings”

The Sunday Argus article claimed that a prominent Christian church on campus which “teaches the Bible as a literal truth” was an “evil”“cult”“violating…human rights”, preaching“unwarranted demonic fear of brimstone, fire and hell”, and “brainwashing”, “impressionable students.”

The former Head of the Journalism Department, George Claassen, who is also the Director of Skeptic South Africa, is quoted in the article as saying: “something immoral, unscientific is taking place on the campus…it is called Shofar…” He describes this registered student organization as“superstition.”

Dr. Juri van den Heever of the Department of Zoology condemns Shofar as “fundamentalist” because“they have misread and been misinformed about the Bible. It is not a literal handbook but a moral one.”

I have no personal experience of Shofar, and have never attended one of their services. However, this article reveals far more about the anti-Christian prejudice of the university lecturers quoted than it does about this church, which is doubtless being slandered. As the Argus article states in its first sentence, this is all about: “fighting for the hearts and minds of impressionable students”. Indeed, there is a World War of Worldviews raging on our university campuses. But, to any unbiased observer it would be clear that the brainwashing is going on in the classroom, not in the Christian fellowships on the campus.

Evolutionism is being propagated with all the religious fervour and evangelistic passion of a cult. As Ben Stein’s new film: Expelled – No Intelligence Allowed documents, Evolutionists have been waging a war of intimidation, persecution and career destruction against any scientist who dares dissent from the view that all life on earth is the mere result of random mutation and natural selection. Much of what is propagated as science in the average university would more accurately be described as Atheistic propaganda and anti-scientific prejudice.

Universities have not always been the temples of Secular Humanism and cesspools of moral decadence that they have all too often become today. There was a time when universities were centres of Biblical Reformation. Despite the recent attempts to portray Christians as anti-education, it is a fact that Christianity gave birth to universities. The idea of higher education grew out of the Christian Faith.

The very name “University” testifies to its Christian origins. Uni Veritas means One Truth. Most professors today don’t even believe that there is an objective Truth. If they wanted to be intellectually honest they should go out and open up a polyversity, a diversity or an aversity. However, universities are a fruit of Christianity.

The greatest universities in the world: Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Heidelberg, Basel and Wittenberg were all founded by Christian ministers. When Oxford was the greatest university in the world, Professor John Wycliffe was its most prominent professor. It was John Wycliffe who first translated the New Testament from Latin into English and mobilized the Lollards to travel throughout England, reading, preaching and singing the Scriptures in English. He was the Morning Star of the Reformation.

Professor John Hus, Rector of the University of Prague, was another courageous Christian Reformer. He who was burned at the stake at Constance.

The great German Reformer, Dr. Martin Luther, was a Professor at the University of Wittenberg.

The Reformer, John Calvin, was the Founder of the Academy of Geneva, which trained leaders who transformed nations.

The English Bible translator, William Tyndale, who was burned at the stake for the “crime” of translating the Bible into English, was a graduate of both Oxford and Cambridge universities.

What has happened that universities, once renowned as centres of Biblical Reformation and Spiritual Revival could have been hijacked by Humanism?

The suggestion that teaching the Bible as “literal Truth” is “immoral, unscientific” betrays an ignorance of both the Bible, and educational and scientific history. The world before Christianity was a world without hospitals, charity, respect for the sanctity for life, or universities.

The irrefutable fact is that Christianity gave birth to modern science. The Scientific Revolution began in the Protestant Reformation and the Bible played a vital part in the development of scientific discovery. Every major branch of science was developed by a Bible believing Christian. Francis Bacon, the Father of the Scientific Method, taught: “There are two books laid before us to study…”, the book of God’s Works, (Creation), Natural Revelation, and the Word of God, (the Bible), Special Revelation.

The great astronomer Johannes Kepler, the Founder of Celestial Mechanics described science as man attempting to “think God’s thoughts after Him.”

Sir Isaac Newton, the Father of Calculus and Dynamics, who formulated the Theory of Gravitation and The Laws of Motion, dedicated his life to knowing the Word of God and the works of God.

The mathematician, Blaise Pascal who invented the first adding machine, and Charles Babbage, the Father of Modern Day Computer Science, were both dedicated Christians.

Joseph Lister, the English surgeon who developed antiseptic surgery and the use of chemical disinfectants, declared: “I am a Believer in the fundamentals doctrines of Christianity.”

James Simpson, the Founder of gynecology and anesthetics declared that he was inspired by the Scriptures to develop the innovations he pioneered.

Sir Michael Faraday, who discovered electromagnetic induction, without which we could have no motors or engines, was a devoted Christian. He declared: “The Bible and it alone, with nothing added to it nor taken away from it by man, is the sole and sufficient guide for each individual, at all times, in all circumstances.”

To characterize Christianity as anti-science is to advertise one’s ignorance. By rejecting the notion of absolutes, Humanists are rejecting the very foundations of science. If there are no absolutes in nature, the results in experimentation could only be relative. If everything is relative, then engineering and other branches of science become impossible. Modern science is based upon the Christian assumption of scientific law.

And materialistic philosophy cannot provide any foundation for science. If this universe were merely the product of chance, then no intelligence could be involved. Man’s mind would also be a product of chance and would not be capable of reason or logic. Creation alone explains the order, design and purpose in nature.

There is much that is immoral and unscientific taking place on our university campuses, but it is the result of Secular Humanism.

By removing the Bible from education and purging all moral values from the curriculum, Humanist universities inevitably are producing an immoral generation. By promoting the unproven and unprovable, theory of evolution, Humanists are promoting a meaningless existence in a chance universe - you came from nothing, you’re going nowhere, life is meaningless.

By advocating “alternative lifestyles” and promoting perversion, Humanists are undermining the essential foundation of society – the family. What we sow is what we will reap. Those who sow sex education and promote promiscuity will inevitably reap the consequences of sexually transmitted diseases – gonorrhorea, herpes and AIDS. By campaigning for abortion, the pro-choicers are destroying their descendants, they are aborting their own futures.

There really is a World War of Worldviews on the university campuses. The battle is “for the hearts and minds of impressionable students.” The Bible warns us: “See to it that no-one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:8

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may approve what is that good, and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

This is a spiritual war. Be prayerful and alert.

Pastors, and parents, are your young people prepared for the World War of Worldviews raging on university campuses? Do they know what they believe and why they believe it? Can they defend it in argument? Have they been effectively trained in soul-winning for a hostile secular environment?

Our universities should not be doomed to decadence. By God’s grace, they can once again become centres of Biblical Reformation. We need to thoroughly prepare and equip our young people to be Salt and Light in the decadence and darkness of secular universities – to make an impact for Christ.
