Amidst the Killing Fields

Volume 2 1988

Testimony of an Evangelist who has recently returned from a field trip deep inside Zambezia Province in Northern Mozambique:

“We travelled amongst the burnt out villages, scorched earth and unburied corpses. Marxist Frelimo troops, aided by Zimbabwe paratroopers, have been systematically devastating the countryside. To deprive the resistance movement of food supplies, they are burning down all the fields of crops and machine-gunning villages from the air.

“We came across several cases where the communists had herded whole congregations or families into huts and burnt them to death inside the blazing buildings. We also saw the Zimbabwe helicopters attacking defenceless villages with their powerful 20mm machine cannons. I saw the aftermath of one of these massacres. There was almost nothing left of the people. Anyone hit by those machine cannon are blown to pieces. Only bloody fragments remained in the soft sand under the blazing African sun.

“I am only going to tell these poor people of Jesus before they are killed. They are all being killed. No-one will survive.”

“Don’t be afraid when you hear of wars and revolutions; such things must happen first, but they do not mean that the end is near. . . Countries will fight each other: kingdoms will attack one another. . . there will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky . . . you will be arrested and persecuted. . . This will be your chance to tell the Good News... Stand firm and you will save yourselves.” Luke 21:9-19
