Double Standards Strike Again

Volume 3 1989

An American Missionary looks at Sanctions:

Wouldn’t it seem logical if we’re going to suddenly, overnight as it were, forget the past crimes and terror of the PLO, and disregard the dastardly deeds for seven decades by the Marxists, and if we are going to take their word as truth, and give them a chance to demonstrate good faith (ignoring the repeated times of betrayal and broken treaties), realizing their track record of treachery. . . wouldn’t it seem logical to apply the same generous standard to South Africa . . . our friend and ally in two World Wars and in Korea?

Shouldn’t we look at the enormous changes in attitude and reform in racial policy that has taken place during the Botha years? Consider the fact that since President Botha came to office, there has not been one single new piece of Apartheid legislation enacted. The other side of the coin reveals that during the same period over thirty major laws concerning Apartheid have been dismantled.

Compare if you will the following:

The Soviets

  • Determined to dominate the world.
  • Committed to spreading their unworkable ideology world-wide.
  • Track record of treachery.
  • No freedom to emigrate.
  • Socialist economy, (communism)
  • Implacable foe
  • Seeks conquest
  • Determined atheist

The South Africans

  • Want to live and let live.
  • Never have tried to export or impose Apartheid anywhere else.
  • Trustworthy track record.
  • Free to emigrate anytime.
  • Free enterprise, (capitalism)
  • Dependable friend
  • Seeks commerce
  • Dedicated Christian

and yet the United States

  • Gives long term low interest loans
  • Invests (Pepsi, Ford, McDonalds, etc.)
  • Offers technology
  • Believes the ‘promise’ of change
  • Rushes aid to earthquake victims
  • Imposes punitive sanctions
  • Disinvestment
  • Denies technology
  • Refuses to notice obvious reforms
  • Ignored devastation by ‘88 floods

The list goes on and on. Maybe we should change our national emblem from the eagle to
the cuckoo-bird.
