A New Threat in Eastern Europe

Along with the dramatic new opportunities for ministry in Eastern Europe have come new dangers. Pornography is flooding in. By the end of the year more Playboy magazines were being sold in Budapest (Hungary) than Bibles. Not only has evangelism been legalised in Romania—so has abortion! Cults are pouring in and the Jehovah’s Witnesses are already making dramatic advances. It is not only good programmes like Animal Farm which are now screened on Romanian TV, but also Hollywood pornography. Also, Western economic aid is not going to help the long- suffering people of Eastern Europe. No, instead of stimulating free enterprise, Western aid is being given directly to bail out the very socialist bureaucracies that caused the chaos in the first place.
Pray for the dear Christians of Eastern Europe. They have successfully come out of persecution only to be plunged into temptation. They have triumphed against oppression but have no experience in how to handle the decadence and deceptions of Western humanism. Perhaps this is where we can help them the most — with timely Biblical teaching and practical warning against all the tactics of permissiveness and secularism.
