Churches Attacked

Volume 4 1996

Increased attacks by the National Islamic Front (NIF) government of Sudan upon the Christians in the liberated zone of Western Equatoria (in Southern Sudan) have caused widespread destruction and suffering. Aerial bombardments have forced many inhabitants to flee from the towns. More bridges have been blown up, further deteriorating the already dislocated infrastructure and hampering missionary relief efforts. Churches and homes have been damaged and destroyed and many Christians killed and wounded in the recent wave of air attacks.

Helicopter gunships attacked and destroyed 2 churches in Mundri on 23 August 1996. These congregations had been ministered to earlier this year by Frontline missionaries.

On 17 July, the National Islamic Front government of Sudan forces bombed Mundri - site of the church conference in March. Six civilians were killed and 28 were wounded. A ground assault on refugee camps in Acholi, Pii and Agago killed 152 people. The Muslim militia and NIF soldiers looted these villages and they raped, tortured and abducted many civilians. The bombings and assaults caused over 60 000 people to flee. For many of the people it’s the fourth or fifth time they have lost their homes. Two Episcopal pastors were amongst those abducted by the slave raiders.

A Frontline mission team delivered medicines, Bibles and other relief aid to the area in September. One of the mission team had to be medevaced by air and hospitalised in a neighbouring country. A further mission team should reach our suffering friends in November.

Please pray earnestly for the Christians in Sudan and for the next team that will be travelling up there soon.

Please also protest to the Sudan government and express your outrage at the ongoing bombing of civilian targets and other atrocities perpetrated by the armed forces of Sudan.

“Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the Word of the Lord may have free course and be glorified, just as it is with you and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.” 2 Thess. 3:1-2
