Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Of course we are not trying to “side with men”! The only reason I mentioned the Heroes of the Faith like Charles Spurgeon, David Livingstone, George Whitefield, William Carey, etc. was to counter the most unfair and inaccurate accusation that Reformed Christians are not concerned for the lost and are therefore not Evangelistic.

From the time I was converted 35 years ago, I have been passionately, enthusiastically and wholeheartedly involved in soul winning. My Reformed convictions have only made me more Evangelistic, not less. What convinced me of the Reformed position, was not how many outstanding Theologians, Evangelists and Missionaries have been Reformed, but the Scriptures.

The reason why Calvinism is so hated by Catholicism, and the world in general, is because it leaves absolutely no room for human pride. The essence of the Reformed position is: God saves sinners. God alone saves sinners. God saves sinners. Completely and permanently. God saves sinners. Corrupt and depraved sinners. Salvation is all of God. It is by His grace, His undeserved favour alone.

The Scriptures make clear that man is by nature corrupt, perverse and sinful. The whole of man’s being has been affected by sin. This corruption extends to every part of man, his body, soul, mind and will. The Scripture makes clear that the natural man is enslaved to sin, a child of satan, rebellious towards God, blind to truth, corrupt and dead in sin. Consequently, men have cut themselves off from God and forfeited all right to His love and favour.

God was under no obligation whatsoever to provide salvation for anyone. However, by His grace and mercy, God has chosen to save many. By the redeeming work of the Son of God and by the renewing work of the Holy Spirit. Our Salvation depends upon the work of God alone and to Him belongs all the glory. This means that in Heaven, no one will be able to boast in the sight of God.

Every Arminian prays like a Calvinist: “Lord please save me.” “Lord thank you for saving me.” “Lord please save my friend.” In our prayers and worship we acknowledge that Salvation is all of God and that all glory belongs to Him. But this is most offensive to human sensibilities and the natural man rages against the doctrines of total depravity and unconditional election.

The Reformation teachings of John Calvin were foundational in the development of modern Europe and North America. Calvin’s teachings on religious toleration, representative government, constitutionalising the monarchy, the separation of powers, the rule of law, established the rights and liberties of citizens and the Christian work ethic which produced the freest and most productive and prosperous societies in history.

John Calvin considered Divine election to eternal life the deepest source of confidence, humility and moral power. The rigorous pursuit of moral righteousness, both personally and in society, was one of the primary features of Calvinism. It helps explain Calvinism’s dynamic social action.

In Holland, Calvinism provided the rallying point for opposition to the oppression of Catholic Spain, which was the occupying the country. In Scotland, the disciple of Calvin, John Knox, pioneered the cause of freedom and reformation of Scotland. The Puritans in England established the supremacy of parliament and constitutionally limited the power of the throne. In North America, Presbyterian pastors were in the very forefront of the thirteen colonies establishing the United States of America on Calvin’s principles of representative government and the Rule of Law, Rex Lex.

The Roman Catholic church declared that John Calvin was: “The most daring, subtle, adroit and successful enemy” of the church of Rome.

You may not agree with Reformed Christians, but you have no right to judge their motives, or write off sincere Christians enthusiastically working for the fulfilment of the Great Commission.

That is why I shared the examples of George Whitefield and John Wesley, Charles Spurgeon and DL Moody. These were examples of Calvinists and Arminians working together graciously for the fulfilment of the Great Commission. You don’t want to make Christians casualties of friendly fire.

Calvinism is not about word games, it is about Fearing God and taking His Word seriously.

The Lord Jesus taught the Total Depravity of man (Mark 7:21-22).

The Lord taught Unconditional Election (Matthew 11:27; Matthew 22:14; John 15:16).

The Lord taught Limited Atonement: (“For this is My blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 20:20; “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out… this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing but should raise it up at the last day. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:37-40; “I am the Good Shepherd, the Good Shepherd give His life for the sheep …I am the Good Shepherd and I know My sheep and am known by My sheep… I lay down My life for the sheep… they will hear My voice …” John 10:11-16).

The Lord Jesus Christ taught Irresistible Grace: (“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” John 10:27-28; “I have manifested Your Name to the men You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me and they have kept Your Word… I pray for them. I do not pray for the world, but for those whom You have given Me… for those who will believe in Me through their word…” John 17;6-20; “… the Son gives life to whom He will.” John 5:21).

The Lord Jesus Christ taught the Perseverance of the Saints: (“Even so it is not the will of Your Father who is in Heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.” Matthew 18:41; “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16; “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life…” John 3:36; “Most assuredly I say to you, he who believes My Word and believes in Him who sent Me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into Judgement, but has passed from death into life.” John 5:24).

It was going through literally hundreds of Scriptures like these that convinced me that, to be faithful to the Scriptures, I had to accept the Reformed position. God is sovereign and Jesus Christ is Lord over all areas of life. The implications of all this may be hostile to our human pride, but I must bow before the Scriptures.

It is not for us to be guessing who are elect and who are not. Our duty is to make the free offer of the Gospel to all. To preach the Gospel to every creature. This is our duty and our privilege.

We are in a Spiritual world war. We in Africa are astounded at the divisiveness of Christians in America. Out here we don’t believe we can attack fellow Christians while Islam and other false religions are attacking us. We need to stand together until the world is thoroughly Evangelised and Discipled.

May God continue to be your joy and strength

Yours in His service

Dr. Peter Hammond
